On-site workshop: students visited the reinforced concrete products plant of Kazmetrostroy
On September 25, 2026, students from Group 23AD02 of the KSUAE Institute of Transport Structures visited the reinforced concrete products plant of JSC Kazmetrostroy as part of their academic curriculum, under the guidance of Olga Petropavlovskikh, a senior lecturer in the Department of Highways, Bridges, and Tunnels.
The enterprise has been in operation since 1999 and manufactures waterproof reinforced concrete rings with a diameter of 5.5 meters, designed for the construction of metro running tunnels. The plant's laboratory conducts incoming and in-process quality control of materials used to manufacture reinforced concrete products and monolithic structures; it monitors adherence to technological standards across the plant's production areas and at metro construction sites; and it engages in the development of new fiber-reinforced concrete blocks—the use of which saves approximately 40–45% on metal while ensuring greater structural strength and durability compared to conventional concrete.
The tour of the production processes was led by the head of the rebar section, the head of the technical control department, and the head of the laboratory. The students proceeded to one of the bays in the main workshop, where they were introduced to the workflow and the processes involved in manufacturing rebar cages. The key areas included the receipt of deformed rebar (with diameters of 12, 10, and 8 mm), as well as storage, cutting, and bending operations. Workers move the necessary components using manual cranes. The workshop features seven rebar cage assembly stations; each cage is tied by hand, comprises 800 parts, and takes 12 minutes to assemble. The students tried their hand at tying rebar. They learned that the plant has established protocols for material handling and task allocation across different production lines, while also addressing quality and occupational safety standards—measures that have successfully optimized production processes and streamlined workflows.
In the molding workshop, the Head of the Quality Control Department explained the primary objective: manufacturing reinforced concrete blocks for tunnel lining. The workshop comprises three bays, which house areas for storage, molding, and product curing. Each assembled watertight ring consists of eight blocks and has a diameter of 5.5 meters; the molding facility is capable of assembling 11 rings simultaneously. The plant operates a production and construction testing laboratory. The center is fully equipped with the necessary machinery, instruments, and measuring tools, as well as the relevant regulatory and technical documentation. A demonstration test was conducted for the students using a B45-grade concrete sample. They received detailed information on material properties and preparation, as well as testing methods for frost resistance and strength.
Field trips to the Kazmetrostroy JSC reinforced concrete plant have become an annual tradition for students from the Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering. The students engage enthusiastically, asking questions and gaining hands-on insight into production technologies, which helps them better understand the practical skills required for their future careers. On-site visits to enterprises are important, productive, and informative, and can also assist students with future employment.
