Score-Rating System in Russia

Score-Rating System

The score-rating system (SRS) is a system for assessing the quality of mastering the basic educational programs by university students, including a multi-point system of assessments and a methodology for compiling rating lists of students.

The system is guided by the principle of constant student learning, and not "from session to session". It is based on a scale of «100 points» and is accumulative during the semester.

The score is given for working actively during the term (working in class, during seminars/ colloquia; doing home assignments; completing tests; etc.). Distributing the (SRS) points depends on the specific discipline.

When summarizing, the points accumulated by the student are translated into a traditional score on a four-point scale (unsatisfactory/ satisfactory/good/excellent) and in the ECTS assessment (A, B, C, D, E, FX, F).

"Unsatisfactory" marks, FX, F are not set in the student record book.

In Russian Federation (RF) the tuition is evaluated also in academic hours. One academic hour equals to 45 minutes. One RF credit (36 academic hours) is equal to 1 ECTS credit.

The Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering adheres to the following grading system:

5 –“excellent”,

4 – “good”,

3– “satisfactory”,

2– “fail”.

The highest grade is 5 (“excellent”). The lowest grade is 2 (“fail”).

According to the curriculum some courses are graded using Pass/Fail system. Under this system, students earning a grade from “3” to “5” in a course will have the “Pass” recorded on the transcript for that course; a grade “2” will be recorded as “Fail”. “Pass” and “Fail” grades should not be used in calculating average points.
